ThirtySix Years in the White House Thomas F Pendel 9781537588322 Books Reviews
I read a lot of interesting facts that I didn't know about our past presidents, very enlightening!
Not my cup of tea. Too disjointed. No real meaning.
I enjoyed the private insights into each
President's life. A good historical, firsthand, story. The author has a lot to share.
Love books about the inner workings at the White House. This was one of my favorites.
This book was delightfully entertaining. I especially enjoyed the remembrances of Abraham Lincoln and the somber effect of losing three Presidents to assassins as told by Mr. Pember. I am grateful that I didn't have to read about scandal and the faults of our previous Presidents.
This is a wonderful read. An eye witness account of so many that stood at the helm of our nation. It is also an unfortunate reminder of the decay of our national fabric. The great loss of godliness, morality, manners and courtesy.
Extremely interesting account, historically helpful account, of presidential administrations from Lincoln to the beginning of Theodore Roosevelt's tenure. Known as the "chief usher", Pendel's job was to usher in various visitors to the President. During Lincoln's administration anyone could see the President if they were willing to sit in line for a lengthy period of time. Because there was no Secret Service he escorted President Lincoln on various walks to other government offices and homes in the vicinity. This led him to exchange private conversations with the President that others were not privy too. This makes the book an extremely interesting primary historical account. But, over-all just a really good read.
This is an amazing first person account of the White House from Lincoln to Roosevelt. Incredible stories of serving the presidents especially Lincoln.
