I just started a MSW program and this book was required for my first class. I will admit that given the title, I didn't expect to enjoy the book and I braced myself for some dry reading. However, I have been pleasantly surprised. This book is well written and presents its material in a reader-friendly way that encourages the reader to keep reading. Each chapter focuses on a different element of poverty and together they form a comprehensive view of the people in America who are affected by poverty, historical perspectives, different types of interventions, etc. Each chapter can also stand on its own so it's not necessary to read the entire book in order to get a good perspective on the effects of poverty on our population.New Perspectives on Poverty has opened my eyes to the problems of poverty in the United States. I feel better prepared to discuss poverty's causes, effects, and possible solutions. I also feel like I have a much broader perspective and understanding of the history of poverty in our country. I am very happy to have read it and intend to keep it in my library for reference in the future.
